"Pleasure in visiting art exhibitions can come from many experiences - in this exhibition of the work of Victor Greenaway there is simply the visual pleasure of looking at an object that is beautifully made by a skilled practitioner of his craft. However, a more personal pleasure is added by relating the objects to personal experience and interest. In recent travels around Greece and Turkey, I have seen in museums many of the ancient vessels on which Greenaway bases his forms. Although his inspiration comes directly from ancient Etruscan kantharos or drinking vessels, these same forms are found throughout the ancient world.

In Greece, these wide bowl stemmed cups called kylix were used for drinking parties where their narrow stems made drinking easier while reclining. In Patmos, I bought a beautiful sea green glazed contemporary example of such a cup decorated with painted slivers of fish that swim within its wide bowl. Executed in swift painted lines, these are a more figurative decoration than Greenaway's beautiful dancing calligraphic marks on his bowls. Nevertheless, both artists delight in using decoration to emphasise these wide-mouthed organic forms...."
